There is no proven direct link between kidney stone disease and active sexual performance. The most likely situation that may be seen in the sexual life of a person with kidney stones is that they cannot focus on their partner because of kidney pain or experience a lack of sexual desire.

Before beginning a more detailed examination, let us dwell briefly on the formation of kidney stones.

A kidney stone forms because of crystals produced by the combination of certain minerals present in the urine. These crystals stick to one another, grow and form stones.

If these crystalline stones forming in the kidney cannot be expelled through the urinary tract, they remain inside the kidney and cause problems.

How Do Kidney Stones Affect Sexual Life?

Kidney stones prevent emotions from being felt during the pain they cause. Kidney stone patients experience no problem whatsoever regarding sexuality when they do not have pain.

A stone that has passed into the bladder may become lodged inside the penis. In such a situation it is inevitable that the stone will affect sexual life. In such cases it is recommended to help expel the stone by drinking plenty of water.

Sometimes there may also be situations in which fragments of a kidney stone become lodged inside the urinary channel running to the penis. In such a situation the stone adversely affects blood circulation in the capillaries. This in turn causes a problem with erection, and a lack of desire emerges because of the situation experienced.

An Active Sexual Life Can Help in Passing a Kidney Stone

According to a recent study, it was seen that patients with an active sexual life passed the stone in their kidneys more easily.

Randomly selected patients were divided into 3 groups. The patients in group 1 were asked to have sexual intercourse at least 3-4 times a week. The patients in group 2 were given daily drug treatment. The patients in group 3 received only standard medical treatment.

The status of the kidney stones in the patients in these groups was followed for 2-4 weeks.

It was observed that 26 of the 31 patients in group 1 (83.9%), 10 of the 21 patients in group 2 (47.6%) and 8 of the 23 patients in group 3 (34.8%) passed their stones.

The mean times to passing the stone emerged as 10 ± 5.8 days in group 1, 16.6 ± 8.5 days in group 2 and 18 ± 5.5 days in group 3.

As a result, it has been possible to comment that patients with a stone size of 6 mm and an active sexual life may be advised to have sexual intercourse 3-4 times a week in order to increase the likelihood of the stones passing spontaneously.
