Prof. Dr. Murat Binbay (Istanbul, Turkey) is a urologist. He received his medical doctorate degree from Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1999, and completed his training in urology as an assistant in 2005.
In the years after completing his specialty training, he focused his studies on uro-oncology and urinary system stone diseases. To increase his knowledge and experience in urinary system stone diseases (endourology) and laparoscopic-robotic surgery, he worked at the Kidney Stone Center of the Duke University (USA), at the University Hospital Leuven—UZ Gasthuisberg (Belgium), and at the Mansoura University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Urology (Egypt); and has also attended more than 50 international training courses.
After being awarded the title of associate professor in June 2012, he was appointed as the Urology Clinic Chief of Haseki Training and Research Hospital in May 2015.
Prof. Dr. Murat Binbay served as a Urology-Robotic Surgery Specialist at Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Hospital between June 2013 and 2017.
Murat Binbay, who started to work as the Director of Uro-oncology and Robotic Surgeries at Memorial Sisli Hospital, a part of the Memorial Health Group, from August 2017, was awarded the title of Professor in February 2018, and currently continues his academic activities as the Head of the Urology Department at Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine.
Treatment of urological cancers with laparoscopic and robotic techniques is one of the leading interests of Dr. Murat Binbay. Dr. Binbay who received a training certificate for laparoscopic surgery in 2007 and for robotic surgery in 2009, has performed laparoscopy and robotic surgeries in more than 2,500 cases in recent years.
Dr. Binbay has vast experience especially in prostate cancer surgeries and kidney cancer surgeries where the kidney is preserved (partial nephrectomy). With this vast and deep experience, Dr. Binbay has been serving as an “instructor” in both national and international percutaneous nephrolithotomy, flexible ureteroscopy, laparoscopy and robotic surgery courses since 2008.
Prof. Dr. Murat Binbay’s other areas of interest include kidney stone treatment performed with minimally invasive procedures such as ESWL, percutaneous (mini/micro percutaneous) and retrograde intrarenal surgery (flexible ureteroscopi). He has many published and ongoing studies on the treatment of kidney stones associated with congenital renal anomalies and the treatment of pediatric kidney stones. He organized the metabolic evaluations of patients, and the appropriate preventive medical treatments administered to patients at Haseki Training and Research Hospital to prevent the recurrence of stone disease.
Prof. Dr. Murat Binbay has more than 100 articles published in international refereed journals, and 10 book chapters. There have been nearly 1,500 citations to his works in the international arena. He has been invited 62 times as a speaker, moderator and panelist to the world's top international urology meetings. In 2007 and 2010, he won the first and the third prizes respectively in the field of best poster presentation at the Southeastern Europe Meetings of the European Association of Urology.
In February 2013, he had the honor of being invited as a ‘master in urology’ to Davos Winter Forum –the Challenge of the Masters, one of the most prestigious meetings held by the European Association of Urology. He has worked as an author for the section titled ‘Urinary Stone Disease’ within the scope of the “Patient Information Project” organized by the European Association of Urology, which has been translated into 8 languages, including Turkish. He was invited to write an article on the treatment of stone diseases with endoscopic surgery for the 4th edition of Smith's Endourology published in early 2019, for which the world’s most prominent figures expert in their fields are invited as writers.
Between 2008 and 2012, he served as the vice chairman of the Foundation Board of ESRU Turkey. Between 2012 and 2014, he served as the vice chairman of the Foundation Board of the International Young Urological Association. Between 2011 and 2014, he served as a member of the Urinary System Stone Disease Department in the European Association of Urology-Young Academic Urologist group.
