Blood being seen in the urine in women can occur when a part of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, the bladder and the ureters, is damaged or irritated.
However, the blood appearing in the urine does not always come from the urinary tract. In women, blood can appear in the urine from the vagina, cervix or uterus, and this in turn gives rise to an incorrect diagnosis of haematuria.
The types of haematuria are as follows:
- In the situation of gross haematuria, in which a person can see blood in their urine, the urine may be seen as pink, red or brown.
- In the situation of microscopic haematuria, in which the urine contains amounts of blood not visible to the eye, blood cells that cannot be seen with the eye can be detected during urology tests.

Urinary Tract Infections
Women carry a higher risk for the development of urinary tract infections because of the location of their urethra.

A urinary tract infection can cause people to feel a frequent and urgent need to urinate.

Bladder and Kidney Stones
Excess minerals can form hard deposits or stones in the bladder and the kidneys.

Stones can tear or scratch the urinary tract and the linings of the organs concerned. Blood coming from these places can mix with the urine and result in gross or microscopic haematuria.

- painful urination
